Environmental Stewardship Intern

Great River Greening

Great River Greening (GRG) is a non-profit organization that engages the public in environmental stewardship work, including education, outreach, and hands-on volunteer restoration events. As a part of this work, Great River Greening provides rewarding internship opportunities for those interested in learning more about stewardship of our shared natural systems and working opportunities in the environmental non-profit sector. Internships for 2025 are slated to run for 6-8 weeks during our peak work periods: March through October, with some flexibility on start and end dates. We are seeking three interns who are passionate about the outdoors, interested in a career in environmental conservation, and offer diverse socioeconomic and cultural perspectives.

Each Environmental Stewardship Intern will work directly with GRG’s stewardship team to connect local communities with GRG’s ongoing education, restoration, and climate resiliency work. This may include outreach, curriculum development, event planning, and assistance in leading hands-on restoration events. While the core internship experience is built around the stewardship team’s mission to connect the public to environmental stewardship opportunities, interns will also meet and learn from the other departments in our organization that help GRG accomplish its wider mission, including:

  • Our Conservation Team, which leads and designs on ecological restoration work
  • Our Field Crew Team, which works year round providing ground level restoration support
  • Our Finance/HR Team, which ensures that GRG operates as a smooth, supportive whole
  • Our Advancement Team, which raises funds through grant writing and philanthropy

The Great River Greening internship program is intended to expose young people to various careers under the umbrella of environmental work. To this end, interns will have an opportunity to learn from each of the above-mentioned departments, with the end goal of creating a capstone project. This capstone might involve planning a community engagement event or campaign, developing educational curriculum, or designing a project budget, for example. The intern will work directly with the Stewardship team and will report directly to the Education and Outreach Coordinator.
